Iceland – Dominos League Round 11: KR loses the game and top position

JustinShouse Dominos League is at the halfway of the Regular Season and there are still another 11 rounds left. There was no lack of interesting games this round. The round ended with change at the leadership position and favorites losing the games.]Round 11 most important game was a defeat of league’s leader KR (8-3). They were defeated by second ranked Stjarnan (9-2) 97-82 on Thursday night. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of KR. It was a key game for the top position in the league. The hosts trailed by 5 points after three quarters before their 34-14 charge, which allowed them to win the game. Stjarnan made 17-of-19 free shots (89.5 percent) during the game. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 22 assists. It was a great evening for the former international point guard Justin Shouse (181-81, college: Mercyhurst) who led his team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 27 points, 7 rebounds and 12 assists. The former international power forward Hlynur Baeringsson (200-82) helped adding 31 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists. The former international guard Pavel Ermolinskij (202-87) responded with 15 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists (was perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line). Stjarnan have a solid series of three victories in a row. They keep a position of league leader, which they share with Tindastoll. Defending champion KR dropped to the third place with three games lost. They were replaced at the leadership position by Tindastoll. KR will play next round against league’s leader Tindastoll trying to make it back to the top of the standings. Stjarnan will try to continue on its current victory against fifth ranked Thor AK in Akureyri. The game had a very big importance for third-ranked Tindastoll as it allowed them to take a leadership position after previous leader’s (KR) loss. Tindastoll defeated 7th ranked Haukar in Sauoarkrokur 87-82. It was an exceptional evening for American forward Antonio Hester (198-90, college: Mobile, AL) who led the winners and scored 23 points and 9 rebounds. Petur Birgisson accounted for 17 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists and 5 steals. American guard Sherrod Wright (193-91, college: George Mason) came up with a double-double by scoring 24 points, 14 rebounds and 4 assists for Haukar in the defeat. Tindastoll (9-2) have an impressive series of six victories in a row. As mentioned above they are at the top of the standings, which they share with Stjarnan. Haukar at the other side dropped to the ninth place with seven games lost. They share the position with Njardvik and IR. Haukar will play next round against Skallagrimur trying to get back on the winning streak. Tindastoll will try to continue on its current victory against third ranked KR at Reykjavik. Bottom-ranked Snaefell (0-11) is still winless. This time they could not use their home court advantage losing their 11th consecutive match to sixth ranked Thor AK (6-5) 102-92 on Thursday evening. The best player for the winners was George Beamon who scored 32 points and 5 rebounds. Sefton Barrett produced a double-double by scoring 29 points and 16 rebounds for the hosts. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Thor AK moved-up to fifth place. Snaefell lost their eleventh game in a row. They still close the standings with 11 games lost. Thor AK will meet league’s second-placed Stjarnan on the road in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Snaefell will play against IR (#9) and hopes to get finally their first victory.The game in Borgarnes was also worth to mention about. Fourth ranked Grindavik (7-4) played at the court of 5th ranked Skallagrimur (5-6). Grindavik defeated Skallagrimur 95-80. Lewis Clinch orchestrated the victory by scoring 20 points, 8 rebounds and 9 assists. Skallagrimur’s coach Finnur Jonsson rotated ten players and allowed the starting five to rest. Grindavik maintains fourth place with 7-4 record. Newly promoted Skallagrimur dropped to the sixth position with six games lost. Grindavik’s next round opponent will be Thor Thorl (#7) in Thorlakshofn. Skallagrimur will play at home against Haukar and hope to win that game. An interesting game took place in Keflavik where 8th ranked IR (4-7) was upset on the court of eleventh ranked Keflavik (5-6) 98-79 on Thursday. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of IR. It was a great evening for Amin Stevens who led his team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 29 points, 13 rebounds, 4 assists and 5 steals. IR’s coach Borche Ilievski tested eleven players seeing no chance for a win. Keflavik moved-up to sixth place, which they share with Skallagrimur and Thor Thorl. Loser IR dropped to the ninth position with seven games lost. Keflavik will face Njardvik (#11) in Njardvik in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. IR will play on the road against Snaefell in Stykkisholmur and hope to win that game. In the last game of round 11 Thor Thorl won against Njardvik on the opponent’s court 104-88. The most impressive stats of the last round was 38 points (!!!), 24 rebounds, 8 assists and 4 steals by Tobin Carberry of Thor Thorl.Njardvik – Thor Thorl 88-104Everything could happen at the game between two tied teams. Both ninth ranked Thor Thorl and 10th ranked Njardvik had identical 4-6 record. But Njardvik was not able to use a home court advantage and was defeated by the opponent from Thorlakshofn 104-88 on Thursday night. The game without a history.
