An impish rearguard by Sarfraz Ahmed helped Pakistan add 75 for their last two wickets and dissuaded Australia’s captain Steven Smith from enforcing the follow-on in hot conditions in Brisbane.
Josh Hazlewood, Jackson Bird and Mitchell Starc took three wickets apiece to secure a 287-run lead, before Australia lost openers David Warner and Matt Renshaw in the early search for quick runs. The hosts led by 327 at the tea break.
