FIVB celebrates 69th anniversary following year of unprecedented success

Lausanne, Switzerland, April 20, 2016 – The FIVB today celebrates its 69th anniversary following a year which has seen volleyball take significant steps towards its goal to be one of the world’s leading family entertainment sports through advancements in innovation, unparalleled levels of fan engagement and global expansion of tournaments.

The FIVB, which is one of the largest international sports organisation in the world with 221 national federations, has gone from strength to strength since its establishment in 1947, when representatives of 14 countries met at the first Congress in Paris where France’s Paul Libaud was elected as the federation’s first president.

The proposal to establish a global body for the administration and governance of volleyball had come in August 1946 when Libaud met with representatives from the volleyball federations of Poland, USSR, Czechoslovakia, USA and Romania. However, the FIVB only began to operate at the first Congress in Paris the following April, forging the pathway to becoming the dynamic and forward-thinking organisation it is today.
