Astros lose RHP Hauschild to Rangers in Rule 5 Draft

NATIONAL HARBOR, Md. — Right-handed pitcher Mike Hauschild, who was drafted in the 33rd round by the Astros in 2012 and went 9-10 with a 3.22 ERA in 24 starts last season at Triple-A Fresno, was taken by the Rangers in the Rule 5 Draft on Friday.
Hauschild, 26, wasn’t considered a top prospect, but he was one of the players the Astros discussed placing on the 40-man roster, though they ultimately decided not to. Teams pay $100,000 to select a player in the Major League phase of the Rule 5 Draft. If that player doesn’t stay on the drafting team’s 25-man roster for the full season, he must be offered back to his former team for $50,000.

“I don’t think we’re ever surprised when we lose a Rule 5 pick,” Astros pro scouting director Kevin Goldstein said. “We’ve seen it happen before. It’s often unpredictable. Sometimes guys you expect go, sometimes [the ones] you don’t expect go.”
