Five to watch in MLS Cup final
- Updated: December 8, 2016
With the showpiece of the American soccer season on Saturday – the MLS Cup final – we take a look at five players to watch from Toronto FC and Seattle Sounders.
Neither side have ever appeared in the final before, which crowns the overall winner of the league through a play-off system, with Toronto having home advantage at BMO Field.
The much-anticipated match will shown live on Sky Sports 3 from 1am on Sunday morning with a few names – some more familiar then others – to keep your eye on during the game.
Jozy Altidore
A name European football fans will know, Altidore comes with plenty of experience having started his career in the MLS and has previously featured for the likes of Villarreal, Hull and most recently Sunderland.
He was part of the exchange deal that saw Jermain Defoe return to the Premier League in January 2015 and has scored 15 goals in 28 appearances in the 2016 season overall, earning a nomination for the US Soccer Male Player of the Year 2016.
The striker is currently making history as the first player in MLS history to score in five straight play-off games – doing so in each meeting so far – as well as notching up four assists for his Toronto team-mates.
Nicolas Lodeiro
Lodeiro is a relative newcomer to Seattle Sounders, having arrived at the club in July from Argentine side Boca Juniors, but he has made an instant impact.
The attacking midfielder won the MLS Newcomer of the Year award for 2016 and has netted eight goals in 18 appearances so far, with half of these coming during the play-off fixtures.
A good friend and Uruguay team-mate of Luis Suarez, he is likely to be most familiar to European football fans for his time at Ajax alongside the Barcelona star and …
