Salty: Regular ABs helping boost HR numbers

KANSAS CITY — The question for Jarrod Saltalamacchia snuck in during a larger question. Asked how much regular at-bats have helped him get back to where he wanted to be at the plate, the question was raised: Are you back to where you want to be as a hitter?
Saltalamacchia, having homered for the third consecutive game earlier Tuesday evening in an 8-6 Tigers loss to the Royals, laughed.
“I would say so,” he said.
Saltalamacchia batted 2-for-29 with the Marlins last April before being released. Add in his midseason stop in Arizona, and he had eight home runs and 23 RBIs for the season. He now has five home runs and 14 RBIs this season.
He had another three-game homer streak last September with the D-backs. But he has never had a start quite like this. No Tigers catcher has.
The Tigers have had some legendary catchers in their history. None homered five times within the first 12 games of a season until Saltalamacchia, the eighth catcher in Major League history to do so since 1913.
