Sources: Marlins make five-year offer to Jansen

NATIONAL HARBOR, Md. — Familiarity may become a factor in the Marlins being able to land the services of closer Kenley Jansen, one of the top free agents on the market.

So might a hefty contract offer.

Miami manager Don Mattingly previously managed the All-Star right-hander during his time with the Dodgers. On Wednesday, Mattingly confirmed he’s previously reached out to the durable closer to gauge if he’s interested in signing with the Marlins.

Then, late Wednesday, a source told MLB.com’s Jon Morosi that the Marlins had extended an offer of five years to Jansen. Jeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports, who first reported the details, said the deal would be worth over $80 million. The club has not confirmed any of the reports.

This came shortly after Aroldis Chapman reportedly agreed to a five-year contract worth $86 million with the Yankees — the largest deal ever for a closer.
