Cardinals still searching for ways to beat good teams

ST. LOUIS — The Cardinals had winning records against the Chicago Cubs (11-8) and Pittsburgh Pirates (10-9) last season, which essentially decided the order of finish in their division. They won 100 games, after all, so they had winning records against almost every team they played.
But the picture has looked quite different so far this season. The Cardinals have struggled to hit upper-tier pitching, and they haven’t been able to execute at key moments against the two teams that could make it another three-team pileup in the NL Central.
After Tuesday’s 2-1 loss to the Cubs, a well-pitched, well-played game marred only by some key mistakes, the Cardinals are 0-5 against Pittsburgh and Chicago. They have been held to one run or shut out in four of those five games.
“We know what kind of team they are, and they know what kind of team we are, a team that plays hard and never gives up,” Yadier Molina said. “Honestly, we have a lot of room for improvement, but it’s really early in the season. There are many players who are now getting their timing, including me, and as more games come, it will all fall into place.”
