Mattingly calls former battery Jansen, Ellis

NATIONAL HARBOR, Md. — Familiarity may become a factor in the Marlins being able to sign a couple of high-profile free agents. Kenley Jansen is one of the top closers on the market, and A.J. Ellis is a coveted backup catcher.

Miami manager Don Mattingly previously managed both during his time with the Dodgers. On Wednesday, Mattingly confirmed he’s reached out to both players to gauge if they’re interested in signing with the Marlins.

“My call was to let them know that we’ve talked about them,” Mattingly said during his media session at the Winter Meetings. “There was legitimate interest, and we just wanted to make sure that they had interest. If there were zero interest, then we can go with another plan, or whatever that would be.”
