O’s back off Trumbo, looking at Carter? The Orioles extended a four-year contract offer to Mark Trumbo, the 2016 MLB home run king, several weeks ago but have pulled that off the table for now, according to a report from MLB Network insider Jon Heyman.

Trumbo, entering his age-31 season, paced the Majors with 47 homers while posting a career-best .850 OPS last season for Baltimore. The fact that the Orioles withdrew their offer to Trumbo has fueled speculation that they may be interested in acquiring another right-handed power hitter in Chris Carter, who emerged on to the scene when he was non-tendered by the Brewers on Friday.

Carter tied for the National League lead with 41 roundtrippers in 2016, but Orioles general manager Dan Duquette said Tuesday that discussions at this point are fluid, adding that the club is more likely to pursue outfielders and catchers. Carter’s fielding ability has always been limited, and he posted a negative-five defensive runs saved total in 155 games at first base for Milwaukee last year, per FanGraphs.

The Orioles are far from the only team interested in Carter since he joined the free-agent market. The Rockies and Rangers are among teams interested in signing Trumbo, according to Heyman.
