Smith first woman to win Spink Award

Claire Smith, the first woman to extensively cover a Major League Baseball beat, was elected the 2017 winner of the J.G. Taylor Spink Award on Tuesday.
The Spink Award, given annually to a sportswriter “for meritorious contributions to baseball writing,” is voted upon by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America. Smith will be honored during Hall of Fame induction weekend July 28-31.
