Steven Smith plundered 164, the highest one-day international score ever made at the SCG, as Australia piled on 8 for 324 in the first Chappell-Hadlee match against New Zealand. Smith’s innings was the equal seventh highest by an Australian in ODIs, as well as his career-best score, and he had valuable support from Travis Head and Matthew Wade as New Zealand paid the price for a surprisingly sloppy display in the field.

Smith was dropped on 13 and again on 152, and Head survived on 7 when Matt Henry put down a sitter at mid-off, and two of the misses were particularly costly as the pair combined for a 127-run partnership that steered Australia safely through the middle overs. Australia had wobbled to 4 for 92 in the 21st over of the innings when Mitchell Marsh was run out backing up, but Smith and Head ensured a hefty target was set.

To win, New Zealand will need to complete the third-highest successful chase in a one-day international in Australia, but perhaps they can take heart from the fact that the two highest – 334 and 331 – both occurred at the SCG in the past six years. Still, they will rue letting Australia get away, with 101 runs coming in the last eight overs of the innings.
