Lawrie, Garcia settle with White Sox for 2017

CHICAGO — The White Sox agreed to terms on a one-year, $3.5 million contract with second baseman Brett Lawrie and a one-year, $3 million contract with outfielder Avisail Garcia, as announced by the team Friday. The White Sox declined to tender a 2017 contract to right-handed hurler Blake Smith, leaving their 40-man roster at 38 entering Baseball’s Winter Meetings beginning on Sunday at the at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland.

Lawrie, 26, batted .248 with 22 doubles, 12 home runs, 36 RBIs and 35 runs scored over 94 games during his first with the White Sox after being acquired from Oakland on December 9, 2015. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list on July 27 (retroactive to July 21) with a strained left hamstring and did not play the rest of the season.
