GBR: Mel Marshall To Loughborough with Hemmings; Finck Joins Dave McNulty in Bath
- Updated: December 2, 2016
British Swimming Restructure
Mel Marshall and Dave McNulty, the two coaches responsible for the bulk of medals for Great Britain in the pool at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, will lead the country’s two main performance centres on the way to Tokyo 2020.
While McNulty remains in charge at Bath, with Jol Finck moving into the program from Millfield, Marshall takes over the helm at Loughborough and will have Dave Hemmings by her side.
Marshall, whose key charge Adam peaty claimed Olympic gold in the 100m breaststroke in world record time, a stunning 57.12 – the swim of the Games – in Rio back in August, moves to Loughborough from the City of Derby swim club. Her promotion in the coaching ranks is one of the worst kept secrets in the sport for three main reasons:
it was unlikely that she and Peaty would remain in a local situation and struggling with pool time and facilities in the way they sometimes have; City of Derby had advertised for a new head coach; and … Adam Peaty told SwimVortex that he had found a new house in Quorn near Loughborough – and there was no way he would be training with anyone other than Mel Marshall.
Dave McNulty
Equally, McNulty’s confirmed place at Bath comes as no surprise: the man has done a fine job, including the top of the heap results: Jazmin Carlin took silver in the 400 and 800m free finals in Rio, and Siobhan-Marie O’Connor silver by a slither adrift gold in the 200m medley.
Marshall and McNulty have the title of National Lead Coach, while Finck and Hemmings carry the title National Coach.
Finck coaches James Guy, the two-time relay silver medallist in Rio and a finalist over 200 and 400m freestyle. The world 200m freestyle champion is now expected to follow his mentor to Bath.
The moves complete a week of reshuffle in the Britain ranks, with Jon Rudd on the way to head Ireland from Plymouth Leander and Loughborough’s James Gibson appointed head coach to the International Energy Standard Swim Club.

The new appointments follow a stirring season for Great Britain in the pool, all but one those in our main image of big chances, James Guy, Adam Peaty, Siobhan-Marie O’Connor, Jazmin Carlin …
