Nats’ pursuit of McCutchen intensifies

WASHINGTON — Hours after Major League Baseball and the Players Association agreed on new Collective Bargaining Agreement, the Nationals began ramping up their aggressiveness.
Talks between the Nationals and the Pirates for a trade that would bring outfielder Andrew McCutchen to Washington intensified Thursday, according to MLB.com’s Jon Paul Morosi, with Washington wanting to complete a deal ahead of Friday’s 8 p.m. ET non-tender deadline.

If the Nationals acquire McCutchen, it would almost certainly result in Trea Turner moving back to his natural position at shortstop. That would leave Danny Espinosa without a clear place on the team, and he could be non-tendered by Friday’s deadline and become a free agent. It could also give Washington clarity on whether to non-tender outfielder Ben Revere. Still, a source told MLB.com’s Adam Berry on Thursday afternoon that, while the Pirates remain willing to engage in offers for McCutchen, they will only move him for the right offer.
