W2W4: Pittsburgh Penguins at New York Rangers, Game 3

NEW YORK — The injury carousel continues to spin in this slow-moving first-round series (really, two games in seven days? It’s worse than watching the NBA playoff), which is tied 1-1 heading into tonight’s Game 3. Veteran defenseman Dan Girardi is out for the New York Rangers but captain Ryan McDonagh may be back pending the results of a doctor’s visit on Tuesday afternoon.
Here’s what else to watch for in Game 3, which starts at 7 p.m. ET:
Who’s in goal for the Pens? The Pittsburgh Penguins’ goaltending situation is still unsettled, as three goalies took part in an optional morning skate but none of them was Marc-Andre Fleury. Penguins coach Mike Sullivan said that Fleury was still considered day-to-day but would not play in Game 3, a stark departure from Sullivan’s normal practice of not revealing much about lineup decisions. Matt Murray — who returned to practice Monday for the first time since sustaining an injury in the Penguins’ regular-season finale — did skate for the second consecutive day, and Sullivan said Murray is available to play.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but if Murray is available to play he would seemingly give the Penguins their best chance at success given his level of play down the stretch. Murray has never played in an NHL postseason game, but his strong play filling in for Fleury after the starter suffered his second concussion of the season pushed regular backup Jeff Zatkoff into the third goaltender role before Murray was injured …
