Astros facing decision to tender Aoki for ’17

HOUSTON — Claiming veteran outfielder Norichika Aoki off waivers from the Mariners was the Astros’ first move of what has been a busy offseason in terms of roster construction, but there’s a chance he might not put on a Houston uniform next season.
Last week’s signing of Josh Reddick to a four-year, $52 million deal satisfies the club’s need for a left-handed bat in the outfield and could make Aoki expendable. The Astros have until 10:59 p.m. CT on Friday to tender Aoki a contract, meaning he could make around $7 million in arbitration. If they non-tender Aoki, he would be a free agent and eligible to sign with any team, including the Astros.
Aoki, 34, is likely a role player with the addition of Reddick, who will probably start in right field. If George Springer moves to center, Jake Marisnick …
