FINA Vice-President Tamas Gyarfas Resigns As Hungarian Boss In Face Of Swimmer Revolt

Hungarian swimming boss and FINA Vice-President Tamas Gyarfas today tendered his resignation at head of his domestic federation after coming under fire from top swimmers over a lack of transparency in voting and management processes.
Katinka Hosszu and Daniel Gyurta, both Olympic champions at the past two Games, led the call for Gyarfas to resign. The bitter dispute threatens to destabilise the Budapest 2017 FINA World Championships and could damage, say Hungarian politicians, the capital city’s bid to host the 2024 Olympic Games.
“I hereby resign because I feel this is the best way for me to help now,” Gyarfas said in a statement to state news agency MTI.
“I became chairman of the Swimming Association in 1993… It was great to be a part of the five European Championships Hungary hosted and I am happy to have been there when we won the right to host the World Championships.”
