Taking a Ride in the ‘Spirit of Innovation’

Since I was about … well, let’s just say since I can remember, the Goodyear Blimp has been flying above sporting events all over the country. The airship covers over 250 events every year including NASCAR, college football and entertainment events like red-carpet arrivals for the Academy Awards and Golden Globes. Back when the Sprint Cup Series was in the western U.S. earlier this season, I rode over Auto Club Speedway in the “Spirit of Innovation” from Goodyear’s base in Carson, Calif. It’s been in service since June 2006, when it was christened by Lesa France Kennedy – president of International Speedway Corporation and a member of the NASCAR Board of Directors. As the granddaughter of NASCAR Founder Bill France, it was fitting that she was on the inaugural ride over a NASCAR track. The “Spirit of Innovation” has been based in Carson since 2015 and Goodyear has operated from there since 1968 but even back to the 1920’s, smaller “pony” blimps were used in Southern …
