India worked hard to establish a position of strength on the second day in Mohali with Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli adding an unbroken 75 to take them to 148 for 2 at tea. England, who had been bowled out for 283 early in the morning, chipped out the openers either side of lunch but they could not get the ball to reverse as significantly as India had done on the opening day.

When Parthiv Patel’s stubborn comeback innings was ended lbw, after Jonny Bairstow’s persuasion that the appeal was worth the DRS, India were 73 for 2 and there was already a sense that the course of the match rested on whether England could separate Pujara and Kohli before tea.

They had a chance – albeit a tough one – when Pujara, on 35, glanced Ben Stokes down the leg side but Bairstow could not hold on, low to his left, with one hand. Pujara went to his fifty from 100 balls to continue a golden run which has included two centuries in this series while Kohli had moved effortlessly, and ominously from Alastair Cook’s point of view, to 40.
