Treble tops for Jacob

A review of the rest of the action from Newcastle where Daryl Jacob rode a treble.
Elgin made an impressive start to his career over jumps in the New EBF “National Hunt” Maiden Hurdle at Newcastle.
Alan King’s four-year-old showed plenty of ability in bumpers, winning on his second start at Haydock before filling the runner-up spot on his reappearance at Aintree last month.
He was second best in the market for his hurdling debut at 9/4, with runaway Carlisle scorer Dubai Angel the 5/6 favourite.
Having been ridden positively, Dubai Angel made his move at the top of the straight, but Elgin was in his slipstream and took over on the run to the final flight before pulling two and a half lengths clear in the hands of Daryl Jacob.
Dan Downie, racing manager for owners the Elite Racing Club, said: “That was really good and Daryl said he was really strong (keen), so I’m surprised he managed to win as well as he did.
“He’s always been a nice horse, but is still raw. I’ll have a chat with Alan and see where we go, but he likes soft ground, which is good.
“I would imagine we’ll just tread carefully with him.”
Jacob completed a quick-fire double aboard Domperignon Du Lys in the Vertem Introductory Juvenile Hurdle.
