Joe Schooling Picks Up His $1m Cheque As Singapore’s First Olympic Champion

Joseph Schooling has becomes first recipient of a Sin$1 million (approx. US$700,000) Singaporean award as his nation celebrates its Rio 2016 Olympians. The 21-year-old became Singapore’s first Olympic champion when he claimed the 100m butterfly crown ahead of more history: a joint silver for defending champion Michael Phelps, the American who holds the world record, Hungary’s Laszlo Cseh and South African Chad le Clos.
At a ceremony in Singapore, Schooling became the first to claim his nation’s landmark $1 million cheque through the Singapore National Olympic Council’s (SNOC) multi-million dollar awards programme (MAP).
