For the third consecutive year, Katie Ledecky (Bethesda, Md./Nation’s Capital Swim Club) and Michael Phelps (Baltimore, Md./North Baltimore Aquatic Club) claimed Athlete of the Year honours at the Golden Goggle Awards. The 13th time round, the USA swim federation’s awards ceremony took place at the New York Marriott Marquis. There were also top honours for Lilly King, the anti-doping queen of hard truth in Rio, Simone Manuel and Anthony Ervin.
After a stellar swansong, Phelps added four Golden Goggle Awards to his treasury: Male Athlete of the Year, Male Race of the Year for the 200m butterfly, Relay Performance of the Year for the 4x100m freestyle relay in Rio, and the IMPACT Award, presented for his lifetime contributions to the sport of swimming.
“My career has been a dream come true, and it wouldn’t be possible without a lot of you in this room. I can’t thank you enough for the support,” said Phelps before addressing his teammates to add:
“It’s been a true honour sharing the pool with you guys. I am done competitive swimming, but I’m never too far from the pool.”
