Iceland – D1 Round 9: Hottur edges Breidablik by three points

The most exciting game of round 9 in the D1 took place in Egilsstadir. This derby game ended with only three-point defeat on the road of 4th placed Breidablik (5-3) to first ranked Hottur (7-1) 90-87 on Thursday evening. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of Breidablik. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning the initial quarter 26-20. But Breidablik won second period 23-18. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. The game was decided in the last minutes when Hottur won last quarter 26-24. 25 personal fouls committed by Breidablik helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. The best player for the winners was American guard Aaron Moss (185, college: Cabrini, agency: Duran International) who had a double-double by scoring 37 points (!!!), 16 rebounds and 7 assists. The former international forward Mirko Virijevic (201-81, college: Freed-Hardeman) chipped in 14 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists. At the other side the best for losing team was American guard Tyrone Garland (185-92, college: La Salle) who recorded 35 points (!!!), 6 rebounds and 6 assists. Breidablik’s coach Larus Jonsson rotated ten players in this game, but that didn’t help. Hottur maintains first place with 7-1 record, which they share with Fjolnir. Breidablik at the other side keeps the fourth position with three games lost. Hottur is looking forward to face league’s second-placed Fjolnir in Reykjavik in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. Breidablik will play against Vestri and is hoping to prove to their supporters that this time they can win. Eighth-ranked IA (1-7) made lots of trouble for second ranked Fjolnir (7-1) in Akranes. The visitors from Reykjavik managed to secure only one-point victory 72-71. However their fans expected much easier game. It was a good game for guard Robert Sigurdsson (187-94) who saved his team from a defeat with 23 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists. Collin Pryor contributed with 14 points and 12 rebounds for the winners. American guard Derek Shouse (188-93, college: Mo.-St.Louis) answered with 23 points and 6 rebounds for IA. Fjolnir have an impressive series of seven victories in a row. They keep a position of league leader, which they share with Hottur. IA lost third consecutive game. They keep the eighth place with seven games lost. Fjolnir will play against league’s leader Hottur in Egilsstadir in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. IA will play at home against FSU (#6) and it may be a tough game between close rivals. The game in Hamar was also quite interesting. 5th ranked FSU (4-4) played at the court of sixth ranked Hamar (4-4). Hamar defeated FSU 85-75 on Thursday. Chris Woods stepped up with a double-double by scoring 24 points, 15 rebounds and 6 assists for the winners. The best for the losing side was Terrance Motley with a double-double by scoring 41 points (!!!) and 15 rebounds.
