Japan’s Daiya Seto Jumpstarts Asian Champs With Gold in 400 Medley (4:10.17)

It could be a big weekend for Daiya Seto, as the Japanense multi-event star got the Asian Championships off to a strong start on Thursday in Tokyo. The bronze medalist in the event at this past summer’s Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Seto found no match from his competition in the 400 individual medley, prevailing by nearly five seconds.
Finishing behind countryman Kosuke Hagino and American Chase Kalisz in Rio, Seto produced a clocking of 4:10.17 on his home turf to easily turn back the challenge of China’s Wang Shun (4:15.10). That performance was not far off the 4:09.71 outing that Seto managed at the Olympics, and it helped Seto elevate two spots on the podium from his appearance at the Asian Games in 2014.
