Kane Williamson, the New Zealand captain, elected to predictably bowl first on a green Hagley Oval surface in Christchurch. They rang in five changes in a bid to arrest their four-match losing streak. There were debuts for opener Jeet Raval and Colin de Grandhomme, Todd Astle returned after a four-year gap, while Tim Southee, who missed the India series because of a hamstring injury, and Neil Wagner returned to the XI.
