A’s prospects Covey, Montas lead Mesa to Fall League no-no

SURPRISE, Ariz. — A’s prospects Dylan Covey and Frankie Montas and Marlins prospect Drew Steckenrider combined to throw an Arizona Fall League no-hitter as Mesa beat Surprise, 1-0, at Surprise Stadium on Tuesday. The no-no is the third in AFL history and the first since 2001.
A’s No. 19 prospect Dylan Covey turned in his best and longest start of the AFL, throwing five hitless innings for Mesa. The 25-year-old right-hander threw 27 of his 44 pitches for strikes, walking one and striking out one.
The walk accounted for the only baserunner vs. Covey, who retired 15 of 16 faced, including 11 in a row to finish his outing.
