Israel – Winner League Round 4: Hapoel Tel-Aviv is defeated by Maccabi T-A in a derby game
- Updated: November 1, 2016
AndrewGoudelock After 4 rounds played we can already see who rules in the Winner League and who belongs to weaker ones. The most interesting game was a derby match between two local teams from Tel-Aviv: Maccabi T-A (#1) and Hapoel Tel-Aviv (#4). Hapoel Tel-Aviv was defeated at home 83-94 and even the fact of playing on their own court did not help. The game was mostly controlled by Maccabi T-A. Hapoel Tel-Aviv managed to win third quarter 23-22. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Maccabi T-A looked well-organized offensively handing out 23 assists. Worth to mention a great performance of American guard Andrew Goudelock (190-88, college: Charleston) who helped to win the game recording 18 points and 4 assists and international Guy Pnini (200-83) who added 21 points during the contest. At the losing side American forward Darrell Williams (203-89, college: Tex.A&M-Comm., agency: BeoBasket) responded with a double-double by scoring 22 points and 11 rebounds. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Maccabi T-A have a solid four-game winning streak. They maintain first position with 4-0 record. Hapoel Tel-Aviv at the other side keeps the fourth place with two games lost. They share the position with 4 other teams. Maccabi T-A are looking forward to face Maccabi Ashdod (#6) on the road in the next round where they are favorite. Hapoel Tel-Aviv will play against Bnei Hasharon and is hoping to prove to their fans that this time they can win. Maccabi K/G has registered their first victory this season after three consecutive losses. The win is especially important as they defeated much higher ranked Maccabi Rishon (2-2) 82-78. The winners were led by American guard Tyshawn Taylor (191-90, college: Kansas) who scored that evening 21 points, 5 rebounds and 7 assists and Eyal Shulman supported him with 22 points. Maccabi K/G’s coach Natan Cohen allowed to play the deep bench players in such tough game. Even a double-double of 14 points and 10 assists by American swingman Patrick Richard (196-90, college: McNeese St., agency: Inception Sports) did not help to save the game for Maccabi Rishon. Maccabi K/G (1-3) left bottom position moving up to ninth place, which they share with 3 other teams. Defending champion Maccabi Rishon dropped to the fourth position with two games lost. They share it with 4 other teams. Maccabi K/G will play against Hapoel Eilat (#9) on the road in the next round. Maccabi Rishon will play against Galil Gilboa (#7) and hopes to get back on the winning track. Third ranked Hapoel Holon (3-1) crushed at home 5th ranked Maccabi Ashdod (2-2) by 18 points 84-66, which is the biggest margin this round on Monday night. Darion Atkins fired a double-double by scoring 19 points and 13 rebounds for the winners. Jake Cohen produced 17 points and 5 rebounds for lost side. Hapoel Holon moved-up to second place, which they share with Hapoel J-M. Loser Maccabi Ashdod dropped to the fourth position with two games lost. They share it with 4 other teams. Hapoel Holon will meet at home Hapoel Jerusalem (#3) in the next round, which may be the game of the day. Maccabi Ashdod will play against the league’s leader Maccabi T-A and hope to secure a win. There were no shocking results in the other games in round 4: Galil Gilboa won against Maccabi Haifa on the opponent’s court 83-78. Bnei Hertzeliyya managed to outperform Hapoel Eilat in a home game 83-74. Ironi Nahariya recorded a loss to Hapoel J-M on the road 75-67.
