Fireworks expected in Soweto derby

Kaizer Chiefs will be looking at extending their lead in the title race of the Absa Premiership when they host archrivals, Orlando Pirates, in the highly anticipated Soweto derby.   The battle lines have been drawn for one of Africa’s biggest fixtures on the football calendar and is set to live up to expectation should both teams go for the kill.  Ranked amongst the top 50 derbies in the world, the clash between two giants of South Africa’s historic township is set to produce fireworks with three precious points on offer as well as the bragging rights of the fans. Since the first meeting of the two forces back in 1970, the fierce rivalry has grown to become a global showpiece, attracting more than 90 000 spectators to Soccer City. Both teams have been far from convincing in the opening stages of the season. After an uninspiring start, losing their two opening matches, Kaizer Chiefs gradually have ascended to the summit of the log with 13 points from six matches while their foes occupy third spot with nine points plus a game in hand.  But as history has proven, previous form counts for nothing when these two sides meet with Chiefs having the better record in previous meetings.
