CLEVELAND — During the celebration of the Cubs’ first World Series appearance since 1945, Anthony Rizzo approached Ryan Dempster and told him, “Thank you.”

Rizzo said he has done this every once in a while this season as the Cubs still joke with Dempster, the former Cubs pitcher turned front-office executive who waved his no-trade clause minutes before the non-waiver Trade Deadline in 2012 and agreed to a trade to the Rangers.

That trade brought the Cubs right-hander Kyle Hendricks, whose brilliant performance helped them win Game 6 of the National League Championship Series and advance to the World Series, where he’ll start Game 3 on Friday night in Chicago.

“[Dempster] takes full credit for it, too,” Rizzo said with a laugh.

As for starting the first Fall Classic game at Wrigley Field since 1945, Hendricks plans to keep his usual even-keeled approach.
