There’s nothing anyone can do to stop Joe Gibbs Racing or any other team from employing the strategy to ride around at the back of the field like they did Sunday at Talladega Superspeedway.

But that doesn’t make it right.

Was it a smart idea? I’d say so. Carl Edwards, Kyle Busch and Matt Kenseth were securely inside the standings to advance to the next round of the Chase. So by not taking any risk, the trio moved on. Teammate Denny Hamlin, even without any help from his JGR compadres, also found a way to advance. So as the Round of 8 begins this week at Martinsville Speedway, Gibbs drivers hold half the spots.

Still questioning whether the Talladega plan was wise?

However, it’s not that simple because while looking at the big picture, what JGR did is erode the importance of the individual race, something the Chase has done bit by bit since its inception in 2004.
