Merritt-ing attention: Rookie stymies Jays in clincher

TORONTO — Indians rookie Ryan Merritt, who carried 11 innings of big league experience into Wednesday afternoon’s American League Championship Series Game 5 start against the Blue Jays, hurriedly silenced any doubters. The left-hander allowed just two baserunners in an impressive 4 1/3-inning showing, departing with a 3-0 lead in hand as the Tribe went on to win by that score and advance to the World Series.
Merritt, 24, did not appear the least bit shaken upon taking the bump in front of a rowdy Rogers Centre crowd, quieting the Blue Jays’ faithful early and often.
