USA vs. Switzerland Women’s Soccer: Score and Twitter Reaction for 2016 Friendly
- Updated: October 20, 2016
While United States presidential candidates duked it out during the third debate on Wednesday night, the U.S. women’s soccer team used a second-half explosion to soundly defeat Switzerland 4-0 in an international friendly from Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah.
After being held scoreless in the first half, the United States racked up all four of its goals in the final 45 minutes of the match.
This was a different-looking squad that head coach Jill Ellis rolled out on Wednesday. With a new cycle being implemented ahead of World Cup 2019 qualifying, 11 players who never made an appearance for the U.S. national team were included on the roster.
Two of those players were in the starting lineup in the form of Stanford junior midfielder Andi Sullivan and Casey Short, another midfielder who had to overcome three separate ACL tears to finally make her debut at 26.
While the United States might have grown accustomed to fast starts in these international friendlies, Switzerland was proving to be no pushover.
The 15th-ranked team in the world’s organized defense was impenetrable despite the United States bossing almost 70 percent of possession through the first 45 minutes.
Switzerland was also outshot 7-2 in that first half.
