Merritt-ing attention: Rookie stymies Jays in debut

TORONTO — Indians rookie Ryan Merritt, who carried 11 innings of big league experience into Wednesday afternoon’s American League Championship Series Game 5 start against the Blue Jays, hurriedly silenced any doubters. The left-hander allowed just two baserunners in an impressive 4 1/3-inning showing, departing with a 3-0 lead in hand.
Merritt, 24, did not appear the least bit shaken upon taking the bump in front of a rowdy Rogers Centre crowd, quieting the Blue Jays’ faithful early and often.
