Jones wins AFL’s 2016 Roland Hemond Award

PHOENIX — Cris Jones, who has evaluated, taught and mentored aspiring umpires at the Arizona Fall League (AFL) since 2005, has been named recipient of the league’s 2016 Roland Hemond Award for long and meritorious service to the AFL. Jones will receive the award during pre-game ceremonies Wednesday at Scottsdale Stadium prior to the 6:35 p.m. game between the Mesa Solar Sox and defending champion Scottsdale Scorpions.

“The Fall League has become synonymous with Major League Baseball’s player development process over the past 25 years, but it also serves as a proving ground and stepping-stone for managers, coaches, front-office personnel and umpires. In addition to over 2,600 former Fall League players who have reached the Major Leagues, we’re equally proud of the 54 Major-League umpires who furthered their careers in the Fall League.”

Jones The Bloomington, Ill., native was influenced in childhood by his father, Jimmie, a high school and college (Big Ten Conference, Missouri Valley Conference) baseball umpire.
