Levi Giese There were just three rounds played in Regular Season of 1st Division and we can clearly see which teams will fight for top positions and which will try to avoid bottom places. The fans could enjoy quite many interesting games in the last round. The round ended with change at the leadership position, favorites losing the games and games ending by tiny margin.First defeat of Lahti (3-1) against Porvoon Tarmo (2-2) 96-81 was the most important game of the last round. The hosts trailed by 3 points after first quarter, but they stormed back to get the 6-point lead at the halftime and eventually won the game 96-81. Porvoon Tarmo made 23-of-29 free shots (79.3 percent) during the game, while Lahti only scored two points from the stripe. Porvoon Tarmo forced 20 Lahti turnovers. Porvoon Tarmo looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. 26 personal fouls committed by Lahti helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. It was a good game for guard Esko Salonen (185-96) who led his team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 25 points, 9 rebounds and 10 assists. American forward Levi Giese (206-90, college: Lafayette) contributed with 24 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists for the winners. American guard Rashad Smith (201-93, college: Tulsa) answered with a double-double by scoring 16 points and 14 rebounds for Lahti. Lahti’s coach Arttu Mannelin rotated ten players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Lahti will play next round against strong Espoo United trying to make it back to the top of the standings. Porvoon Tarmo will try to continue on its current victory against ToPo in Helsinki. Espoo United defeated Oulun NMKY at home 84-75. It was a great evening for American point guard Jeb Ivey (190-80, college: Portland St.) who led his team to a victory scoring 21 points and 4 assists. Lauri Toivonen helped adding 14 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists. Espoo United’s coach Ville Neva allowed to play the deep bench players saving starting five for next games. The best for the losing side was American guard Zach Stahl (196, college: Northeastern, agency: Pro Partner Sports Management) with 23 points and 7 rebounds. Oulun NMKY will have a break next week, which should allow them to rest in order to get back on the winning path. Espoo United will try to continue on its current victory against Lahti on the road. Jyvaskyla BA (2-1) recorded a loss at the home court on Friday night. Hosts were defeated by Forssan Koripojat (2-2) 90-79. It was an exceptional evening for Roderick Flemings who led the winners with a double-double by scoring 20 points, 16 rebounds and 4 assists. Valtteri Leppanen came up with 14 points and 7 assists for Jyvaskyla BA in the defeat. Jyvaskyla BA’s coach Juuso Konttinen tested ten players in this game, but that didn’t help. Forssan Koripojat will meet at home Pyrinto II (#8) in the next round. Jyvaskyla BA will play against Jarvenpaa (#3) and it may be a tough game between close rivals. A very interesting game took place in . It ended with only three-point home defeat of HNMKY U23 (1-2) to Raholan Pyrkiva (2-0) 77-74 on Sunday evening. The best player for the winners was Artem Shchepkin who scored 23 points and 4 assists (on 8-of-10 shooting from the field). Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. Raholan Pyrkiva’s next round opponent will be Karkkila (#7) at home which should be theoretically an easy game. HNMKY U23 will play against Ura Basket and it may be a tough game between close rivals. Very important is a home loss of Korikouvot (2-2) against HyPo (1-1) on Sunday night. Host Korikouvot was crushed by HyPo in Kouvola 87-66. It was a good game for Deandre Upchurch who led his team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 38 points (!!!) and 15 rebounds. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. HyPo will face PeU-Basket (#13) in Pernio in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Korikouvot will play on the road against Namika Lr (#12) in Lappeenranta and hope to win that game. There were no big surprises in other games of round 3: In Division HBA-Marsky was beaten by Pyrinto II on the road 93-78. FoKoPo lost to ToPo on its own court 87-98. Oulun NMKY unfortunately lost to HBA-Marsky in Helsinki 86-97. Pyrinto II was rolled over Espoo United at home 59-78. Porvoon Tarmo was defeated by Jarvenpaa on the opponent’s court 96-85. PeU-Basket was beaten by Munkkiniemen in a home game 61-77. JyWe won against Karkkila on the road 81-65. PuHu Juniorit managed to outperform Namika Lr on its own court 89-74. Ura Basket was rolled over Espoo Basket in a road game 83-55. PuHu Juniorit crushed Korikouvot at home 114-75. The game without a history. Pyrinto II led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. They shot 63.8 percent from the field. It was a good game for American forward Terrell Vinson (201-90, college: Massachusetts, agency: HMS) who led his team to a victory with 25 points and 8 rebounds (on 10-of-12 shooting from the field). Guard Eero Lehtinen (194-85) contributed with 15 points and 9 rebounds for the winners. Four Pyrinto II players scored in double figures. Point guard Edon Maxhuni (183-98) answered with 19 points and point guard Lassi Nikkarinen (184-97) added 15 points in the effort for HBA-Marsky. Both coaches tested many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest.
