U.S. College Notebook: Ireland’s Shane Ryan Back At Penn State And Looking Sharp

Last year could have been Shane Ryan’s final season at Penn State University. But instead of racing for the Nittany Lions, Ryan took a redshirt campaign and shifted his home to Ireland in order to represent his father’s homeland at the Olympic Games in Rio. The decision paid off for Ryan as he advanced to the semifinals of the 100 backstroke in Brazil and also picked up valuable racing experience in the 50 freestyle and 100 free.
Now, Ryan is back at Penn State, and the early results from his senior year have been solid. Over the weekend, Ryan posted victories in the 100-yard backstroke (47.01) and 100 freestyle (44.03) in a loss to Virginia Tech. In an earlier triumph over Towson University, Ryan managed wins in the 50 free and 100 free.
