Those who took the hint that William Buick was rushing back from Canada to Pontefract were rewarded as D’bai landed the feature EBF Stallions Totesport.com Silver Tankard Stakes.

Buick was in action at Woodbine on Sunday evening riding The Queen’s Dartmouth to finish second in the Canadian International.

Flying through the night to get to West Yorkshire on time, Buick showed no signs of jet lag on the Charlie Appleby-trained juvenile, who finished third in the Group Two Champagne Stakes on his previous outing.

He looked to be travelling well in behind the leaders turning into the straight but Buick needed to make room for himself and gave Reachforthestars a nudge to create a gap.

Once in the clear he looked set to win impressively before Al Hamdany closed rapidly and the two got close together before the 9/4 favourite held on to win by a head.

Buick said: “He did well, it’s quite heavy ground for two-year-olds which makes it hard work. Charlie thinks quite a bit of him and he’s come on from his run in the Champagne.

“He’s a nice horse and that was a good performance, he stuck his neck out.

“It’s hard to judge him on that performance, they were a fair way clear of the third, but I didn’t want to be too hard on him.”
