Portugal – Proliga Round 1: Sanjoanense loses to Esgueira / Oli

PedroValente The Regular Season in Proliga just started. There was no lack of interesting games this round. The most crucial game of the last round was a loss of Sanjoanense (0-1) at the home court on Saturday night. Hosts were defeated by Esgueira / Oli (1-0) 60-49. The game was mostly controlled by Esgueira / Oli. Sanjoanense managed to win fourth quarter 14-6. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They dominated on the defensive end, holding Sanjoanense to just 6 points in third quarter. Esgueira / Oli forced 22 Sanjoanense turnovers. Point guard Pedro Valente (175-85) stepped up and scored 17 points for the winners and power forward Bolon Sauane (193-94) chipped in 8 points and 7 rebounds. At the losing side forward Pedro Azevedo (193-81) responded with 22 points and 7 rebounds. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Esgueira / Oli is looking forward to face Ginasio (#5) in Figueira da Foz in the next round. Sanjoanense will play on the road against Ginasio in Figueira da Foz and it may be a tough game between close rivals. Very significant was Dragon Force’s 77-71 road victory against Vasco in Group North. Center Pedro Oliveira (204-0) nailed 20 points and 5 assists for the winning side and Diogo Araujo accounted for 16 points and 8 rebounds. point guard Miguel Toreia (180-93) came up with 20 points and 8 rebounds for Vasco in the defeat. Both coaches tested many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Dragon Force will play against Sangalhos (#4) at home in the next round. Vasco will play against Academico FC to get more than just one victory in their record. Quite upsetting was Ginasio’s 19-point home defeat in a game versus Academico FC who smashed hosts Pedro Gouveia fired 16 points and 7 rebounds (on 7-of-8 shooting from the field) for the winners. Joaquim Soares produced 18 points and 8 rebounds (made all of his eight free throws) for lost side. Both coaches allowed to play bench players saving starting five for next games. Academico FC will meet at home Vasco (#8) in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Ginasio will play against Esgueira / Oli and it may be a tough game between close rivals. And what about another game where Academia beat Estoril Basket 67-54 on the road. Worth to mention a great performance of Francisco Henriques who helped to win the game recording 23 points. Both coaches allowed to play bench players saving starting five for next games. Academia’s next round opponent will be Fisica (#8) in Torres Vedras and are hoping to win another game. Terceira’s 25-point road win over Fisica 84-59 was very exciting. Ekjersey Viana stepped up with a double-double by scoring 18 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists (on 8-of-10 shooting from the field) for the winners. Terceira’s coach Daniel Brandao felt very confident that he used 11 players and allowed the starting five to get some rest. Terceira will have a break next round. Fisica will play on the road against Academia (#1) in Lisboa and hope to win that game. There were no shocking results in the rest of the games of round 1: In Group North Guifoes lost to Sangalhos on the opponent’s court 56-65. In Group South Benfica B managed to outperform Belenenses CF in a home game 80-76. Angra lost to Barreirense on the road 75-85.
