Kershaw retires 14 Cubs before allowing hit

CHICAGO — There was speculation before Game 2 of the National League Championship Series that Clayton Kershaw may not be quite rested enough to pitch effectively against the Cubs. That theory was squelched almost as soon as the game began, when the Dodgers ace began mowing through the Cubs’ lineup with barely a blink.
Kershaw averaged 10 pitches per perfect inning through four on Sunday night, baffling the Cubs with mostly four-seam fastballs, retiring the first 14 batters he faced before finally surrendering a base hit to Javier Baez with two outs in the fifth. There was a bit of foreshadowing leading up to Baez’s single; both batters before him — Ben Zobrist and Addison Russell — made good contact off Kershaw, flying out near the Wrigley Field warning …
