Tribe tabs Kluber, Bauer, Tomlin for ALCS Games 1-3
- Updated: October 12, 2016
CLEVELAND — Indians manager Terry Francona pushed his bullpen to the limits in the final month of the regular season, then leaned on the group heavily in sweeping the Red Sox in the American League Division Series. Now, Francona is asking his relief corps to play a key role in helping Cleveland continue to advance.
During Wednesday’s workout at Progressive Field, Francona announced that the Indians will start ace Corey Kluber, Trevor Bauer and Josh Tomlin in Games 1, 2 and 3, respectively, against the Blue Jays in the AL Championship Series, which begins on Friday at 8 p.m. ET on TBS in the U.S. and Sportsnet (English) and RDS (French) in Canada. Those three pitchers took the ball and took down Boston in the ALDS, during which the Indians never planned on using a fourth starter.
For Tuesday’s Game 4 of the best-of-seven set against Toronto, the Indians will need an additional arm. Francona said that the Tribe plans to give that start to rookie right-hander Mike Clevinger, then use an assortment of relievers behind him. Clevinger was in the bullpen for the ALDS and will remain available as a reliever for the first two games of the ALCS.
