Wayne Rooney will not start against Spain on Friday but when he returns to the team it will be the 124th fixture in which a Manchester United player has captained the country.
The total of caps won by United’s England captains is unmatched.
Rooney has captained England on 14 occasions, while Bryan Robson (65), David Beckham (24), Ray Wilkins (10), Rio Ferdinand (7), Bobby Charlton (3) and Paul Ince (2) all led their country while playing for United.
Next on the list are Wolves, whose total of 93 is largely thanks to Billy Wright who wore the England armband 90 times.
However, when it comes to the number of England captains a club have provided, Liverpool lead the way.
Nine players have skippered England while playing their football for Liverpool: Peter Beardsley, Ray Clemence, Emlyn Hughes, Paul Ince, Kevin Keegan, Phil Neal, Phil Thompson, Michael Owen and, most recently, Steven Gerrard.
