India set New Zealand a target of 475 to win the Indore Test, declaring almost immediately after Cheteshwar Pujara had reached his eighth Test hundred just under an hour from tea on the fourth day. With the pitch continuing to offer little undue assistance to the bowlers, India gave themselves four-and-a-half sessions in which to try and bowl New Zealand out again.

They made one early incision, Umesh Yadav going around the wicket in his first over and attacking the stumps to get Tom Latham lbw playing around his front pad. Seven minutes from tea, Umesh dealt New Zealand another blow, physical this time, striking Martin Guptill on the wrist with a short ball that didn’t rise as much as the batsman expected while trying to drop his bat and hands out of the way. Guptill carried on batting, and went to tea on 8, with Kane Williamson alongside him on 23.
