Rooney ‘respects’ decision

England captain Wayne Rooney says he ‘understands and respects’ Gareth Southgate’s decision to drop him to the bench.
Rooney is England’s all-time leading scorer and will remain captain of the side but interim boss Gareth Southgate has decided to leave him out of the starting XI for Tuesday night’s World Cup Qualifier in Slovenia.
Despite his omission, the Manchester United striker faced the media on Tuesday and said: “Of course you want to play.
“I understand and I respect the manager’s decision and I’ll support the players 100 per cent, and try to help the players get three points tomorrow. I’ll be ready to come off the bench if needed.
“I show great pride in playing for my country, whether that’s from the start or from the bench.
