Latvia – LBL2 Round 1: Jelgava loses the game and top position

Agnis CavarsThe Regular Season in LBL2 just started. There was no lack of interesting games this round. The most important game of round 1 took place in where Kekava crushed Jelgava (0-1) 97-78 on Tuesday night. The game was mostly controlled by Kekava. Jelgava managed to win second period 27-20. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They outrebounded Jelgava 44-30 including 17 on the offensive glass. Kekava looked well-organized offensively handing out 25 assists comparing to just 11 passes made by Jelgava’s players. 24 personal fouls committed by Jelgava helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. Forward Agnis Cavars (196-86) stepped up with a triple-double by scoring 24 points, 15 rebounds and 10 assists for the winners and forward Nauris Miezis (189-91) chipped in 34 points (!!!) and 7 rebounds. At the losing side forward Andris Justovics (200-89) responded with 17 points and 8 rebounds. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Jelgava will play next round against strong Ventspils Augstskola trying to make it back to the top of the standings. Kekava will try to continue on its current victory against Riga/Ridzene on the road. RSU smashed Buki/BJSS in Riga 90-70. Rihards Ginters (192-93) nailed 32 points for the winning side and Kristaps Jurjans accounted for 13 points, 17 rebounds, 5 assists and 5 blocks. point guard Jorens Dulevskis (181-95) came up with 16 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists for Buki/BJSS in the defeat. Both coaches tested many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Buki/BJSS will play next round against strong ViA trying to get back on the winning streak. RSU will try to continue on its current victory against RTU. It will be extra interesting game as RTU is their local rival from Riga. Madona (0-1) recorded a loss on the court of LU/BS Riga on Sunday night. Visitors were rolled over by LU/BS Riga 94-65. Davis Klegeris fired 27 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists for the winners. Arturs Skute produced 25 points and 9 rebounds for lost side. Madona’s coach Agnis Bekeris gave up on the game allowing to play twelve players seeing no chance for a win. LU/BS Riga’s supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will face at home their local rival from Riga DSN/SB. And what about another game where Marupe (#6) beat BJBS Riga by 25 points 84-59 on the road. Worth to mention a great performance of Martins Zemturis who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 26 points and 12 rebounds (on 13-of-16 shooting from the field). Marupe’s coach felt very confident that he used entire bench saving starting five for next games. Marupe’s supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will face at home their local rival from Riga . RTU’s 22-point road win over DSN/SB 79-57 was very exciting. Nauris Bikovs stepped up and scored 15 points, 6 rebounds and 7 assists for the winners. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. RTU’s supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will travel locally in Riga to the arena RSU. There were no shocking results in the rest of the games of round 1: Turiba destroyed Ogre/Kumho Tyre on the opponent’s court 82-42. ViA managed to outperform LU/BS Riga in a home game 83-65. Riga/Ridzene lost to Limbazi on the road 58-87. Kekava crushed VEF skola on its own court 103-83. Jekabpils II lost to Livani in a road game 53-76. Ogre/Kumho Tyre won against Marupe at home 69-53. Turiba outscored Valmiera/ORDO-2 on the opponent’s court 100-68. Saldus rolled over VEF skola in a home game 78-59. BJBS Riga was defeated by Jekabpils II on the road 70-69. At the losing side forward Aigars Indrikovs (200-89) responded with a double-double by scoring 12 points and 11 rebounds and Davids Atelbauers (180-99) scored 12 points. Turiba will face BJBS Riga (#6) at home in the next round which should be theoretically another easy game. Ogre/Kumho Tyre will play against Valmiera/ORDO-2 and hope to win that game.
