Spain – LEB Gold Round 2: Araberri loses the game and top position
- Updated: October 9, 2016
Mike Carlson There were only 2 rounds played so far and it’s still very beginning of the Regular Season in LEB Gold. Coincidentally all hosts won their games. The most important game of round 2 took place in San Sebastian where Gipuzkoa beat Araberri (1-1) 69-54 on Friday night. The game was mostly controlled by Gipuzkoa. Araberri managed to win third quarter 13-10. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. American power forward Mike Carlson (206-91, college: Truman St., agency: Duran International) scored 22 points and 7 rebounds to lead the charge for the winners and point guard Ricardo Uriz (188-80) chipped in 8 points during the contest. Gipuzkoa’s coach used a ten-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Trinidad and Tobago center Kyle Rowley (213-90, college: St.Mary’s, CA) responded with 9 points and 12 rebounds. Araberri will play next round against Melilla Baloncesto trying to make it back to the top of the standings. Gipuzkoa will try to continue on its current victory against Barca II in Barcelona. Leche Rio Breogan defeated Burgos in Lugo 87-76. Nigeria-American forward Michael Fakuade (201-89, college: Ill.-Springfield) notched a double-double by scoring 15 points and 11 rebounds (on 7-of-8 shooting from the field) to lead the effort and Josep Franch supported him with 12 points and 7 assists. Even 8 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists by Serbian center Goran Huskic (210-92, college: Howard Col., TX) did not help to save the game for Burgos. Burgos’ coach Francisco Hernandez rotated ten players in this game, but that didn’t help. Burgos will play next round against Oviedo CB trying to get back on the winning streak. Leche Rio Breogan will try to continue on its current victory against Caceres Basket on the road. The most crucial game of the last round was a loss of Marin (1-1) in Coruna on Friday night. Visitors were defeated by Leyma Basquet (2-0) 71-65. The best player for the winners was Dagoberto Pena who scored 15 points. Tim Derksen produced 25 points and 9 rebounds for the guests. Both coaches used bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Leyma Basquet will meet Palma (#18) in the next round which should be an easy win for them. Marin will play against Magia Huesca (#16) and hope to win that game. There were no shocking results in the other games in round 2: Ourense lost to Prat on the opponent’s court 72-84. Oviedo managed to outperform CB Clavijo in a home game 85-74. Winless Palma recorded a loss to Melilla on the road 74-68. Castello defeated FC Barcelona II on its own court 76-64. Caceres lost to Forca Lleida in a road game 66-78. Palencia won against Huesca at home 77-69. Prat – Ourense 84-72Very expected game when Ourense (0-2) was defeated on the road by CB Prat (2-0) 84-72 on Saturday. The hosts trailed by 1 point after first quarter, but they stormed back to get the 11-point lead at the halftime and eventually won the game 84-72. CB Prat made 20-of-25 free shots (80.0 percent) during the game. The best player for the winners was Pep Ortega (201-84) who scored 18 points and 7 rebounds. Guard Xavier Forcada (194-88) chipped in 15 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists. Naturalized Russia power forward Dmitriy Flis (204-84) produced 16 points and 5 rebounds and center Francisco Guerra (214-92) added 12 points (on 6-of-7 shooting from the field) respectively for the guests. Both coaches used bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. CB Prat will meet Cocinas.com (#14) in the next round which should be an easy win for them. Ourense will play against Castello and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
