Jumping the Shark: Cubs get to SF ‘pen early

CHICAGO — After needing eight innings to break through against the Giants in Game 1 of the National League Division Series, the Cubs did so 18 pitches into Jeff Samardzija’s Game 2 start. And soon after, they knocked out the former North Sider.
After taking a 1-0 lead in the first when Ben Zobrist drove in Dexter Fowler, the Cubs tagged Samardzija for three runs in the second — more runs than San Francisco starters had allowed in the team’s last four games combined. The first four Cubs hitters reached in the inning, prompting Giants manager Bruce Bochy to get his bullpen stirring before Samardzija, who pitched for Chicago from 2008-14, had collected his fourth out of the night.
