Baez ends scoreless duel to lift Cubs in G1

CHICAGO — Javier Baez, inserted in the Cubs’ lineup for his defense, provided the offensive spark on Friday night. Baez launched a 3-2 fastball from Johnny Cueto into the left-field bleachers in the eighth inning to lead the Cubs to a 1-0 victory over the Giants in Game 1 of the National League Division Series at Wrigley Field.
Cueto had followed Madison Bumgarner’s example, and held the Cubs to two hits over 7 1/3 innings before Baez connected. …
