Bullpen bails O’s out with two double plays

TORONTO — The Orioles dropped Tuesday night’s American League Wild Card Game to the Blue Jays in 11 innings, 5-2, but manager Buck Showalter’s magic with his bullpen was on full display as Baltimore battled, twice making pitching changes that resulted in game-changing double plays on the first pitch.
The biggest one came in the ninth, when he stayed away from All-Star closer Zach Britton, instead opting to bring in side-armer Darren O’Day in relief of Brad Brach to face Russell Martin with two runners on with one out after a leadoff double from Josh Donaldson and an intentional walk to Edwin Encarnacion.
O’Day threw a first-pitch sinker and Martin rolled it to third baseman Manny Machado, who turned an inning-ending double play to send the game to extras at 2-2.
