Showalter makes smart calls with bullpen
- Updated: October 5, 2016
TORONTO — Orioles manager Buck Showalter’s magic with his bullpen management was on full display in the American League Wild Card Game on Tuesday night, as he twice made pitching changes that resulted in game-changing double plays on the first pitch.
The biggest one came in the ninth, when he stayed away from All-Star closer Zach Britton, instead opting to bring in side-armer Darren O’Day in relief of Brad Brach to face Russell Martin with two runners on with one out after a leadoff double from Josh Donaldson and an intentional walk to Edwin Encarnacion.
O’Day threw a first-pitch sinker and Martin rolled it to third baseman Manny Machado, who turned an inning-ending double play to send the game to extras at 2-2.
